Free Expression Policies and Guidance

April 21, 2024
The following message was sent to all students on April 17, 2024.

Dear Yale Students,

It has been a challenging and painful year for so many, but throughout it all, I have been impressed by how you have uplifted and strengthened each other. I applaud your passion, commitment, and advocacy, and support your right to exercise your voices on campus. I am writing with a reminder about the university’s position on free expression, and to provide guidance on peaceable assembly and the use of on-campus outdoor spaces.

In these last weeks of the spring semester as the weather warms up, many of you are moving more of your organized events outside. Registered Yale organizations may apply to sponsor activities in on-campus outdoor spaces. Approval of such activity requests is contingent on safety, security, timing, access, and other considerations.

We are here to offer guidance, assistance, and resources in support of the exercise of free expression and the safety and security of all members of the university community. Please contact secretary.office@yale.edu with any questions regarding free expression and peaceable assembly and submit space usage requests for the spaces managed by the Office of the Secretary through this online form

I encourage all members of our community to extend grace to one another, consider our words carefully, conduct ourselves with decency and respect, and move forward with kindness, empathy, and compassion.

Sincerely,
Kimberly Goff-Crews
Secretary and Vice President for University Life
